How do you prevent soot on the glass of stoves and fireplace inserts?

A glass-clear pane without soot at all times - the wish of every fire lover. But what do you need to do to ensure that your fire has clean glass panes?

Most fire enthusiasts perceive frosted or constantly cloudy panes as a major annoyance - it would be much nicer to be able to watch the cosy play of flames through crystal-clear panes at all times. What do you need to do to ensure that your fire has clean panes?

You should pay attention to this when buying a stove:

Quality fireplaces are much less susceptible to window fogging. They have a sophisticated combustion air supply system tailored to the firebox, which also includes window rinsing. Such a flow system keeps the ceramic glass pane virtually soot-free by directing preheated combustion air as a constant flow of air over the ceramic glass pane. Soot deposits on the pane can thus be prevented as far as possible.

Infrared-coated, heat-reflecting special glasses offer clear advantages in terms of the view of the fire. Although they are somewhat more expensive, they remain clean where conventional glass literally loses its view in comparison - especially with sensibly low heat output in well-insulated, modern living spaces.

Clean discs during operation:

  • Only use very well dried firewood. Please also read our tips on perfect firewood.

  • Always adjust the air slide so that the fire is yellow and lively during operation. Too little fresh air inhibits both the fire and the functions of the window rinsing. This leads to incomplete combustion with heavy soot formation and correspondingly dirty panes.
  • Add draught to the chimney every time you light the fire by using plenty of finely split fir wood.

  • Only fill your fireplaces with the correct amount of wood. You will find information on the appropriate amount of wood in the user manual for your stove.

Glass sooting is often caused by insufficient draught in the chimney. You should therefore only buy your stove or fireplace insert from a qualified dealer. They will ensure proper installation and calculate the right chimney for you.
