Lighting a fireplace made easy

Freezing temperatures outside, cosy warmth inside from a flickering fire in the fireplace insert – a delightful thought. But how do you light the fire properly to make it truly comfortable?

Use dry logs. As a general rule, the drier the wood, the higher the usable energy content. As cold wood burns worse, bring your firewood into the warm room a few days before use. The bark can also be burnt, but should be placed at the bottom or back of the firebox if possible. Hardwoods such as beech provide plenty of embers and softwoods such as spruce, fir or pine are suitable for lighting the fire.

The ash does not need to be removed after every fire as it helps the fire to burn in more quickly.

The perfect fire in just a few steps

  • Place the logs, preferably beech, horizontally or vertically in the combustion chamber. A wood log should not weigh more than 1 kilogramme. The total fuelwood requirement depends on the nominal heat output (kW) of the fireplace insert. Refer to the user manual for information on the total weight of the firewood.
  • Add at least 10 logs of finely chopped kindling wood, for example fir wood.
  • Open the air slide.
  • If there is a damper, open this too.
  • Depending on local conditions, an external combustion air supply may need to be opened
  • Use a firelighter to light the fire.
  • When the fire is already burning well, set the air slide to about the middle position. The correct position of the air regulator depends on the installation location and the fireplace or exhaust system. With a little practice, you will find the right position for your fireplace to provide a lively view of the flames with yellow and orange flames and thus an ecological combustion.

Now you can fully enjoy the pleasant warmth and the flickering flames of your fireplace insert.
