What to do with the ash from the stove or fireplace insert?

After the cosy enjoyment of the fire, the fireplace ash remains in the firebox. What to do now?

Removing ash from the firebox

The ash must be completely cooled down before disposal. This can take several hours. It is best to wait 24 hours before removing the ash from the firebox of the fireplace. A ash grate and an ash drawer make it much easier to remove the ash from the stove. The remaining ash residue in the firebox can be scooped out with a fireplace tool or conveniently vacuumed out with an ash vacuum cleaner.

How to dispose of the ash

Place the ash in a fireproof metal bucket and leave it there for at least two days. The ash should then have cooled down completely. Ask your local chimney sweep or contact the public waste disposal service in your area to find out how to dispose of the ashes properly. In most cases, the ash can be disposed of with the regular waste. Make sure that the ash is completely cooled down or even moistened before you dispose of it in the rubbish. This can lead to dangerous fires.

What else can I use the fireplace ash for?

Some of the ash can be used to clean the ceramic glass of the fireplace in an environmentally friendly way. Dip a damp ball of newspaper or household paper into the cold fireplace ash and rub the glass with it. Then wipe with a dry ball of paper.

According to the latest findings, it is no longer recommended to use the ash as fertiliser for the garden.

Tip

The ash does not have to be completely disposed of after each firing. On the contrary - cold ash in the firebox makes it easier to light the fire again.

Almost all Attika stoves and fireplace inserts have a ash grate and a practical ash drawer. Ask your local Attika specialist partner to show you the functions and advantages of an ash drawer.
